James Johnson’s Throwback Dunk

My love of James Johnson highlights has not been a secret.  After filling up the video tape reel (and the box score) in Memphis last year he has brought his talents to Toronto.

In the Raptors win over the Pistons last night Johnson threw one down on Andre Drummond.  I couldn’t resist adding this to JJ’s budding archive resembling David Thompson & Dominique Wilkins.

The James Johnson Block Party

The Memphis Grizzlies should thank their lucky stars for picking up James Johnson off the scrap heap.  This fella can really stuff the box score.

In the Grizzlies last four games alone Johnson has swatted away ten shots.  The Wake Forest alum’s block percentage for the season is over 6%.  This is the second highest shot blocking rate in the NBA behind only Anthony Davis.

NBA History: Box Score Stuffers

Memphis Grizzlies forward James Johnson has provided a huge boost in his short time with the team. Since being signed for the league minimum salary in December Johnson has displayed why he was a first round pick five years ago. Combining offense and defense he has been worth +7 points/100 possessions to coach Dave Joerger.

He is playing 23 minutes per night so he benefits from a little more rest than his top opponents but his pound-for-pound production has been off the charts.  Here are Johnson’s numbers per 36 minutes played:

13 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 2.2 steals, 2.6 blocks

Remarkably no player in NBA history has averaged 2 steals, 2 blocks and 4 assists/36 minutes in a full season.  Lowering the threshold to 1.5 blocks and 1.5 steals plus 4 assists and 5 rebounds/36 here is the complete list of Box Score Stuffers:
