NBA History: Josh Smith “The Shot Swatter”

Detroit Pistons forward Josh Smith went over 1,500 career blocks last month.  This is impressive not only because Smith isn’t a Big but also because he is just twenty-eight years old.

Blocks are not the be-all end-all defensive stat but they are an example of positive scouting.  If you block a lot of shots then you are able to prevent opposing players from making shots.  This is a positive skill for a defender.

Josh Smith has more career blocks than Chris Webber, Shawn Kemp, Pau Gasol and Rasheed Wallace.  In all nine seasons with the Hawks and this year with Detroit, Smith has blocked at least 3% of the opposing team’s two-point attempts.  He is one of ten players in the past four decades to accomplish this in each of his first ten seasons.
